02 / Know

Know the Story

The rhythm was learned before anyone called it a lesson.

I wrote Chepé from my Sunday mornings with Grandpa in East Los Angeles—pan dulce before sunrise, family stops, menudo, cards, oldies and the shuffle that taught us rhythm before we knew we were learning it.

Chepé carrying a young Martin in a bucket at the family home in Pico Rivera, 1976—an early moment in the family story behind the song.
Sunday don’t sprint—it slowly swings.

The origin

Before sunrise, Chepé gathered the grandchildren into Red Ford Betsy and set Sunday in motion: warm pan dulce, railroad tracks, church drop-offs, Tío Pelón, Nacho’s and La Quebradita. Back home, menudo simmered, cards reached the table and the oldies brought out Grandpa’s unmistakable shuffle.

03 / Feel

Feel the Soul

What I want you to feel.

Traditions teach through repetition and presence. A morning route, a shared meal and a familiar dance can become a family inheritance long after the ordinary Sunday has passed.
